ABOUT US?

Greetings to everyone! This blog page has two creators: Marcos Antonio Lorenzo Berenguel and Juan Carlos Rubio Navarro. We are two students of the Master's Degree in Secondary Education Teaching (Foreign Language specialty).

We have both worked hard to create quality teaching material, so we hope you like it and, above all, that it is useful. If you have any questions, you can ask us in the comments, whether you are students or fellow teachers. See you! ✌😁

WHAT IS OUR PURPOSE?

The main purpose of this blog is to teach 1st year Bachillerato students (B1 level) the story of 'The Happy Prince' (Oscar Wilde) in greater depth and from a more serious perspective. All of this, obviously, accompanied by grammar and vocabulary content.

READ 'THE HAPPY PRINCE' by OSCAR WILDE

Dear students, find the text of 'The Happy Prince' in the following link. Hope you appreciate it! 😊

In case they have some problems related to vocabulary, a glossary with difficult terms has been included at the end of the document

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO LEARN?

On the one hand, the students will focus their attention on the study of Conditionals:
  • The Zero Conditional;
  • The First Conditional;
  • The Second Conditional;
  • The Third Conditional.
On the other hand, students will also learn vocabulary related to two recurring themes throughout the story:
  • Precious materials and others
  • Parts of the city.
Here there is a chart including all the terms:

THE HAPPY PRINCE: A CLOSER LOOK

Finally we get into it, so let's take a look at this presentation. Before reading the story, there's an introduction about the plot and the characters of 'The Happy Prince', so that students activate their prior knowledge about the story.

Once the students have read the text, they must answer 10 comprehension questions, included in the presentation itself.

Finally, they will be able to compare their answers by consulting the rest of the presentation, since there's an exhaustive analysis about the literary elements present in 'The Happy Prince'.

The preparation of this presentation has been completed in the BookCreator application, so here is a link to access it and start reading!

GRAMMAR: THE CONDITIONALS

Next, we will study the grammar of this unit. As we have mentioned before, the grammar session will be focused on the study of Conditionals:

  • The Zero Conditional;
  • The First Conditional;
  • The Second Conditional;
  • The Third Conditional.
We can find the entire theory in the infography at this link: https://n9.cl/emszw

Besides, through different interactive elements and consolidation tasks, students will be able to acquire relevant knowledge of grammar.

Here we can see a preview of our infography, click it to take a closer look! If you want to interact with all its elements, access through the link. 😊

VOCABULARY: PRECIOUS MATERIALS AND PARTS OF THE CITY

Afterwards, we will study the vocabulary of this unit, which has been extracted from the text of 'The Happy Prince'. There will be two main topics to explore in this vocabulary section, summarised in the following chart:

Obviously, we can consult all the terms in the same link as grammar: https://n9.cl/emszw

Students will be able to learn vocabulary through interactive tasks, such as flash cards with the pronunciation of the words and some matching games with images.

Here we can see a preview of our infography, click it to take a closer look! If you want to interact with all its elements, access through the link. 😊

CONSOLIDATION TASK 1: DO YOU KNOW THE WORD?

Once you read the book and know all the lexical and grammatical contents, it is time to do a special task we made for you.

This task is kind of the Spanish contest called "Pasapalabra", where you are given a set of letters and you have to guess the words by its definition. This game is the same; it gives you the first letter and its definition, so you can guess the word based on the lexical content we saw before. To accomplish this objective, you will have to work in groups of four students.

Use the link below and I wish you luck!🍀

CONSOLIDATION TASK 2: WHAT IF...?

Oscar Wilde is performing 'The Happy Prince' at the theatre. During the play, there will be three scenes in which the audience can participate and modify the story to their liking. In pairs, use all your imagination and knowledge of Conditionals to create the best story.

You must use the Pixton application to be able to modify the vignettes, in addition to carefully reading the instructions that appear in the vignettes. Therefore, Conditionals should be used whenever required.

Here you have the link to the comic: https://n9.cl/t8872

And here, a little appetiser, click it to take a closer look:

(to share and edit Pixton application, it is necessary to have a premium account, that's why the link connects to a pdf with all images)

FINAL EVALUATION: KAHOOT

Finally, students must complete this kahoot individually to demonstrate the knowledge they have acquired during this unit!

You can access to the test with the link below:
